The Foundation Stage – Early Years

At MES we ensure that the step from home or nursery to school is a happy one.

The daily routine has a definite structure which draws from each of the areas of ‘Development Matters.’

Children explore environments and are surrounded by examples of positive relationships. All staff plan, observe and assess making formative and summative assessments.

Learning inside and out utilises a range of natural resources and encourages speaking and listening skills which tap into letters and sounds.

Early independence, problem solving and confidence sets the foundations for our graduate profile.

For every unique character every day sees active learning, playing and exploring as well as creating and thinking critically.

All areas are planned for in teams and Foundation Stage One and Two provide thorough regular information to parents and Year One in order to support transition.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Literacy, Communication, Mathematics, Understanding of the World, Physical Development and Expressive Arts and Design are all interconnected,

Students have two sessions of spoken Arabic a week as well as specialist lessons in P.E and Music.

Key Stage 1 – Year One and Two

A thematic approach to the core subjects gives all individuals the opportunity to contribute to the planning of a topic. We aim to teach a diverse curriculum with inquiry highlighted as a key learning process. We believe that learning is fun and we encourage creativity and imagination.

Key objectives are woven into learning in order to ensure progression across Primary.

Year groups also utilise the genre lists in the National Literacy Strategy in order to give students a broad understanding of the key features of text. Their writing is assessed five times a year against the Big Writing criterion scale and is carefully moderated and tracked.

The wide range of reading material available in school gives students at MES Cairo an early love for books. Their early comprehension strategies as well as fluency and expression are also assessed weekly.

Specialist lessons include ICT, PE, Art and Music. The students also have Arabic and religious studies sessions.

The whole of Primary embraces the 5 R’s; Relationships, Reflection, Resilience, Resourcefulness and Risk Taking as we are all passionate about equipping children with lifelong learning skills.

We communicate clearly to parents about behaviour expectations and procedures and send regular positive feedback home.

MES Cairo follows Golden Rules and children are aware of the fortnightly focus.
